The planning begins

After someone (Diane?) realized that this was our 40th graduation anniversary, a small group of classmates have been meeting at the offices of the Calhoun Times to discuss how best to organize such an event. With such short notice, it's best to just jump right in and get started. Some of the big early decisions have been surprisingly easy. The old school has been replaced with an entirely new complex and the facility will be able to accommodate our event the weekend of the 6th and 7th. The dates were chosen with an eye toward (a) having a home football game that we could attend that Friday and (b) giving us maximum preparation time. Thus, one of the last games of the season.

These meetings have been like mini-reunions since some of us haven't seen each other in 40 years. Lots of smiles. Lots of hugs and handshakes. Someone brings a yearbook and everyone crowds around to be reminded of people and events.

Which got me thinking. This won't be just about the year 1975 (and only the first half of that). It will be about the entire high school experience. For some of us, it will be about the entire twelve school years since we've known each other since first grade. Some even attended kindergarten together!

Did we know what was ahead? I didn't. That's for sure. Seems to me you aim your arrow in a particular direction and follow it over terrain that you couldn't quite discern from where you stood. Once you are on the other side and look back, the experience puts so much into perspective. If only we knew then even some of what we know now, huh?

For me, I hope I get to learn how folks lives developed relative to their expectations. What they learned about themselves. How their worldview(s) evolved. What they hope for the future. For it's all a bit different now, isn't it? 1975 it's not. And in some - most, I hope - ways, that should be a good thing.
